The hills are covered with diverse wet low evergreen forest with even large trees grown flattened to the ground on the higher windswept slopes.

The Rakwana Massif with its mountain ranges are part of the area covered by Sinharaja rain forest. There are few interesting facts on the formation of the Sinharaja Rain Forest in Sri Lanka and how it came in to being. The present rain forests in the world are being an evolution of the earlier rain forests dating back to 150 - 200 million years. There had been three strips of large rain forest lands called Amazon, African and Far Eastern at that time. However these large extents of rain forest areas were later became less in area content and were confined to smaller areas. Then about 140 million years back, during the Paleosoic era, a part of land from the Southern hemisphere called Gondwana land , where present day India and Sri Lanka also were situated, started its slow process of separating from the main land. About 55 million years back during Cretaceous era that land mass called Decan plate , where Sri Lanka and India were located separated from the Southern hemisphere , started drifting towards the equator and joined with the Northern hemisphere called Laurussia.

Colombo

Colombo, the largest city in Sri Lanka, is the commercial capital and located on the west coast of the island. Due to its large harbour and its strategic position along the East-West sea trade routes, Colombo was well known to ancient traders 2,000 years ago. It was made the capital of the island when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire in 1815 and its status as capital was retained when the nation became independent in 1948. The city is a mish mash of colonial style buildings, commercial high rises, hotels and ofcourse the glorious ocean front known as ‘Galle Face Green.’ Some of the finest structures built during the colonial times are still preserved in a part of the city know as ‘The Fort.’ Among the top sites to visit whilst in Colombo are Independence Square, Galle Face Hotel (which is the country’s oldest hotel built in 1868) and the adjoining Galle Face Green, The Fort, the bustling streets of Pettah, Town Hall and the Parliament building in Kotte.

Nightlife in Colombo is nothing to complaint about as the city boasts ample popular nightclubs and bars, mostly frequented by Colombo’s social elite. Colombo is a great city to unwind in and is a stop worth taking for some rest and relaxation!
